CORSIA is the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation, adopted by 191 nations of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) in October 2016. It represents the first global market-based measure designed to address an entire industry sector’s carbon emissions.

The scheme uses market-based environmental policy instruments where aircraft operators must purchase carbon credits from the carbon market to offset their CO2 emissions, with the goal of achieving carbon-neutral growth from 2020 onwards.

The scheme operates in phases, and began with a voluntary Pilot Phase from 2021 to 2023, followed by the First Phase from 2024 to 2026, before becoming mandatory for most countries from 2027 onwards.

All airline operators with annual emissions greater than 10,000 tonnes of CO2 have been required to monitor, report, and verify their emissions from international flights annually since January 1, 2019.
