Challenge

Abatable worked closely with Paris 2024 to build and implement their climate contribution strategy, centred around climate solidarity and maximising impact.

As the outsourced carbon procurement team for the Games, Abatable selected the final six projects through a rigorous process covering multiple stages: defining the strategy, tech-enabled sourcing, quality assessment, long-term offtake structuring, and final delivery.

key results

400

Thousands of hectares of threatened forest protected

200

Thousands of households benefiting from clean energy

600

Thousand clean cooking stoves reaching those who need them

Challenge

Paris 2024 aimed to deliver a Games with a credible, high-integrity climate impact reaching well beyond the event itself.

The Organising Committee wanted a climate strategy centred on solidarity and lasting legacy, not simply offsetting emissions on a one-for-one basis. That meant identifying high-quality projects able to deliver verified climate, nature, and community outcomes across multiple geographies, while giving the Games confidence in a complex and rapidly evolving voluntary carbon market.

The procurement process needed to balance scale, integrity, and delivery certainty across a multi-year horizon.

Solution

Abatable acted as the outsourced carbon procurement team for the Games over more than three years, defining and delivering the climate contribution programme end to end.

A robust climate contribution programme. Abatable defined the carbon credit strategy with Paris 2024 to achieve maximum impact, agreeing on a climate contribution approach that enabled Paris 2024 to support climate action beyond the Games' boundary.

Tech-enabled carbon sourcing. Abatable engaged carbon project developers through its carbon sourcing platform, which covers 95 per cent of the market. The process resulted in 23 million tonnes of CO₂ offered through 94 relevant projects from 25 developers.

Quality assessed. Abatable reviewed proposals against Paris 2024's stringent quality criteria, then ran in-depth quality assessments on shortlisted projects and developers to construct the final 1.3 million tonne portfolio.

A long-term offtake strategy. Abatable structured and delivered an innovative carbon offtake strategy that provided certainty for the Games and early-stage financing for project development partners, using its pricing and policy insights to maximise impact.

The final portfolio includes six projects: Conservation Coast REDD+ in Guatemala, South Kivu Cookstoves in DRC, Chyulu Hills REDD+ in Kenya, Kenya Cookstoves, Sakal Solar PV in Senegal, and Nigeria Cookstoves.
